A sprinkler system, as any homeowner would know, is an effective active fire prevention system, consisting mainly of a large water supply unit, supplying enough water pressure and flow rate to a large water supply pipe system, on which fire sprinklers are installed. These systems play an important role in keeping homes safe from both fire and smoke outbreaks. It is usually the duty of the local fire department or the local fire police to install sprinkler systems within residential buildings. The basic premise of the system is to make sure that the sprinkler heads are in good working order at all times.
Sprinkler systems generally contain one of three components: the main body, which is known as the main passage pipe, the laterals, which are located on the premises, and the support system. The laterals carry the water and the spray out to the different parts of the premises. The main passage pipe is normally located in the basement. The support system is typically placed near the foundation and consists of several laterals connected to each other. It is possible for sprinklers to be installed in a single pipe but this is usually not done due to the increased risk of damage in such a setup.
There are a number of considerations that need to be made prior to installing any kind of sprinkler system. First, it is important to determine the length of the main passage pipe, which is referred to as figure 54. Figure 54 identifies the distance, in meters, between the first bend of the main steam pipe and the last bend in the laterals. The length of the pipes must be enough to accommodate the flow rate that is specified in the sprinkler application schedule.
Next, it is important to determine the locations of the laterals. The laterals should be located on the outside of the premises, in order to prevent damage to the structure of the building. Once the locations of the laterals are determined, they can be marked with an “X” mark or an exclamation sign. It is also possible to place cones in order to mark the location of the main passage pipes. These cones should be located within one meter of the bends in the laterals.
After determining the location of the bends, it is important to place the main steam pipe in a position where it will have the most water resistance. This will allow the pipes to run through the entire length of the laterals without any problems. Another consideration involves the type of joints that will be used in the sprinkler system. The most common type of joints is PVC joints.
Sprinkler systems are designed using modern methods, as opposed to the outdated rotary nozzles. The rotary nozzles were originally used to control the rate of water flow through the pipes. The newer modern methods do not have any moving parts, so there is no risk of them becoming damaged during heavy rain. The rotating nozzles are made up of a housing and spindle assembly. The housing is made out of durable materials such as granite or steel, while the spindle assembly consists of flexible rubber or synthetic material, and is attached to the housing by a collar or screw.

The joints that are most susceptible to damage during a severe storm may be between the sprinkler head and the sprinkler pipes.
